UCL Centre for Anaesthesia celebrates 15 years

Monty Mythen

Yesterday the UCL Centre for Anaesthesia (CFA) celebrated its 15th Anniversary at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health. The CFA is one of the largest and most productive anaesthetic research groupings in the world and has been an integral part of the successful expeditions that Xtreme Everest has made.

The CFA is made up of the anaesthetic research and education departments of UCLH, Royal Free Hospital, Whittington Hospital, NHNN in Queens Square, GOSH, ICH, RNTNE, those within the Central London School of Anaesthesia and the UCL Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment (CASE) medicine of which Xtreme Everest is a part.

Xtreme Everest's Professor Monty Mythen who is the Director & Smiths Medical Chair of anaesthesia and critical care for the CFA, welcomed colleagues to a day of reflection on what had been achieved so far as well as highlighting the future of the Centre. He spoke of how the goals laid out in 2001 had not only been achieved but surpassed.

Xtreme Everest's Dr Ned Gilbert-Kawai, Dr Dan Martin and Professor Mike Grocott were invited speakers to the event, with Dan giving an overview of CASE's past, present and future which included several historical photos of Xtreme Everest trekkers and investigators much to the amusement of the audience.

Ned spoke about his research into the microcirculation of Sherpas and Lowlanders which won the Eleanor Davis-Colley prize for the best PhD presentation in 2014.

Mike spoke about the Health Services Research Centre, of which he is the Director.

Professor Mythen summed up the event by telling colleagues "Today we will reflect on a bright past and a look to a brilliant future... Congratulations on your magnificent achievements"

The Xtreme Everest team offers congratulations to both Professor Mythen and colleagues on their 15 years̢۪ worth of achievements and looks forward to working with them in 2015.
