XE's First School Engagement Day

photo 15

The first Xtreme Everest school engagement day took place in February and was a huge success. 26 boys and 3 teachers from Whitgift School visited the ISEH for an interactive science event.

The day began with the boys hearing a little about the physiological effects of high altitude, with attention given to the different responses of bulk oxygen delivery, microcirculation and cellular changes. Following this, the boys then had to plan experiments to measure these changes which were to be carried out later in the day.

After the experiments were planned, the boys had three separate sessions on each of the research areas where they compared their experiments to those carried out on Xtreme Everest expeditions. Once the final plans were in place, the boys carried out the investigations and observed the changes for themselves with all getting a chance to go in the hypoxic chamber.

To end the day, the boys watched the award-winning Grain Media and Al Jazeera documentary ‘Doctors on Everest’ which brought their experiments to life and linked them back to the intensive care environment.

The day was a huge success and thanks must be given to Dr Phil Hennis, Sarah Hayden, Jonny Coppel, and Dr Aleks Kotwica for their contributions, as well as the boys from Whitgift School who were a pleasure to have with us.
