From Fire to Ice expedition update

The From Fire to Ice team, who Xtreme Everest Investigator Dr Andre Vercueil is part of, has recently released their latest expedition video.

Filmed in part at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health (ISEH) where Xtreme Everest is based, both Dr Vercueil and Dr Phil Hennis, Xtreme Everest Research Associate, are shown putting Rob Small through his paces during a CPET test. A (CPET or CPEx) test is a Cardio pulmonary Exercise Testing, which is a non-invasive simultaneous measurement of the cardiovascular and respiratory system during exercise to assess a patient’s exercise capacity. Xtreme Everest undertook such testing both at sea level and at altitude as part of their 2007 and 2013 expeditions to Everest.

Andre will not only be joining the expedition, but will be assisting performing tests both before, during and after, all whilst monitoring Rob’s physiology. The team are hoping to see if there are any clues in Rob’s body’s response to the stress and cold, along with the sustained exercise that may help to explain how he survived.

The From Fire to Ice expedition will be looking to further understand how the human body reacts to extremes of stress. Rob Small, who survived after being covered in 43% total body burns after a fire in 2010 is heading up this ambitious expedition Rob is hoping to be the first (non-military) burns survivor to walk across the South Pole.

Living under canvas and traveling on skis, the team will also be towing sledges of supplies 112 miles to the South Pole. They will face minus 50 degree wind chill and ascend to a polar plateau of almost 10,000 feet. The team's ultimate goal is to find important clues that can be translated back to the care given to intensive care patients suffering from severe burns.
