The Xtreme Everest 2 methodology paper has been chosen as this week̢۪s featured article on the F1000 Research homepage. The article by Ned Gilbert and other members of the Xtreme Everest research group outlines the overall plan of the research carried out in 2013 during the Xtreme Everest 2 expedition.

The abstract for the article begins:

Oxygen availability falls with ascent to altitude and also as a consequence of critical illness. Because cellular sequelae and adaptive processes may be shared in both circumstances, high altitude exposure (‘physiological hypoxia’) assists in the exploration of the response to pathological hypoxia. We therefore studied the response of healthy participants to progressive hypobaric hypoxia at altitude. The primary objective of the study was to identify differences between high altitude inhabitants (Sherpas) and lowland comparators.

The F1000 Research website is offering an innovative new approach to publishing research data:

F1000Research is an Open Science publishing platform for life scientists, offering immediate publication and transparent refereeing, avoiding editorial bias and ensuring the inclusion of all source data.
