What's it like to cycle halfway up Everest?

Xtreme Everest's Dr Denny Levett recently tested the BBC's Justin Rowlatt at the ISEH in the hypoxia chamber. He wanted to find out What's it like to cycle halfway up Everest?

Taking him down to just 12% oxygen, which is equivalent to an alltitude of 4,500 meters, he was put through his paces via a CPEx test. Cardio pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET or CPEx) is a non-invasive simultaneous measurement of the cardiovascular and respiratory system during exercise to assess a patient̢۪s exercise capacity. It is used in patients before surgery to help predict outcomes and has featured heavily in the Xtreme Everest research.

In 2013, Denny led the Xtreme Everest exercise research and was a member of the field team in Kathmandu She was also the medical officer in Kathmandu.
