Dr Edward (Ned) Gilbert

Research Leader

SPR Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine

Ned Gilbert

Ned has been a member of CASE Medicine since his early years as a junior doctor. Having been a core investigator on Xtreme Alps 2010, Ned was appointed as the CASE Medicine Research Fellow in August 2011. He is currently undertaking a PhD at UCL looking into the physiological adaptations innate to high altitude natives, which confer a performance and/or survival advantage at high altitude over lowland inhabitants. He is also an honorary lecturer on the extreme environment physiology BSc course at UCL.

Away from CASE, Ned has a slightly odd fixation for punishing his body on sporting endeavours. Not content with running a half marathon to work and back each day, Ned has taken to Ultramarathons including the 'Rock and Ice Ultra' set amongst the Artic tundra.

Temporarily stepping back from full time clinical medicine, Ned has taken on the role of Research Leader for Xtreme Everest 2. He is therefore responsible for co-ordinating all of the scientific research for the expedition, and hopes to find some spare time to undertake his own!
