Mountains and Moviemakers

Filming in Monjo

Mountain filmmaker and co-director Michael Brown is leading the small advance film team on the trek in; he'll be joined by director Greg MacGillivray and the stars of /Return to Everest, /Jamling Norgay and Araceli Segarra, later in the month. So far they've filmed locations around the Buddhist monastery of Thangboche and other scenes along the trek route in the giant-screen IMAX format. They've also spent time with the Sherpas in the villages, especially the photogenic children.

Jack Tankard and Ryan Ross are assisting Michael with the advance IMAX shots. They are joined by Sherpas, Kaji, two Chombis, Phuraa, Passang and Pema who do the carrying. They divide the IMAX Mark II camera package up into four or five pieces. They are also training the Sherpas in all aspects of building and breaking down the camera between shots. The Sherpas are enjoying their role and Kaji is even shooting with a video camera at times.

They have been taking advantage of luck and a spectacular place to get shots. Two days ago while setting up a shot in a beautiful small valley a large group of school children formed around the camera. They decided that they would be great for a shot so we had the kids line up at the bottom of a hill for a race. Ryan held up a candy bar behind the camera and all of the kids ran up the hill past the camera in a mad dash.

The expedition is just getting started; but they'll be there for the long haul - nine weeks at Base Camp.
