Rajendra Kumar BC

Dr. Rajendra Kumar BC holds Master's Degree in Biochemistry from MS University of Baroda, India and PhD degree in Tropical Medicine from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. He has extensively been trained in health research methodology, epidemiology and research ethics. He has taken variety of internationally recognized health research related short course trainings from Harvard School of Public Health (USA), Queen Margret University (UK), European Educational Programme in Epidemiology (Italy), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), The University of Alabama (USA), Danish International Development Assistance (Denmark), Indian Council of Medical Research (India), etc.

He is the recipient of several prestigious scholarships and fellowships from Nepal and abroad. He has a long history of working (15 years) in variety of health and medical research fields. He has been affiliated with Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) as Chief Research Officer for more than a decade and as Research Advisor for two and half years.

He is the visiting faculty/professor in various kinds of medical and public health colleges in Nepal and giving lecture to Bachelor to Master's level students particularly in health research methodology, epidemiology and biochemistry. He has supervised thesis projects of variety of students studying at the master's level in Nepal and also PhD level students from abroad (university of Aberdeen and university of Liverpool, UK). He has extensive experiences in conducting and leading variety of health and medical research projects in Nepal. He is conducting various kinds of health related research trainings (basic to advanced level) in various kinds of public health and medical institutions in Nepal. He involved himself in preparing national level research guidelines (especially ethical) for conducting health research in Nepal.

He is the life member of Nepal Public Health Association, founder member of Nepal Public Health Foundation, immediate past president of Sahara Paramarsa Kendra, General Secretary of Himalayan Association for STI-AIDS, and Chairman of Ojus Ayurveda Hospital & Research Centre Pvt. Ltd.

He worked as a consultant for various health related projects funded by WHO, Nepal Health Sector Support Programme, DFID (UKAID), National Planning Commission, UNDP, KIDASHA (UK), Child Workers Scheme (UK), Save the Children, JICA, GFA Consulting Group GmbH (Germany), GIZ/Health Sector Support Programme, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), Netherlands' Leprosy Relief, Social Welfare Council, Swiss Development Co-operation, South Asian Institute for Policy Analysis and Leadership, etc.

This time, he has taken on the role of Nepali lead researcher for Xtreme Everest 2. He is therefore responsible for taking medical screening and testing of Sherpa participants. He has played a key role for taking national ethical approval of the study entitled "the physiological response to high altitude in Sherpa and lowlanders (Xtreme-Everest 2: the 2013 Everest Medical Research Expedition)" from the NHRC. He will be the key contact person whenever authority from NHRC will organize a monitoring and supervision of the XE2 project. That time he will be with them to familiarize XE2 ongoing process in Kathmandu, Namchhe and Everest Base Camp. He might be demanding everywhere whenever there will be some medical testing among Sherpa participants, and dealing with research ethics during the process.
