First non-Nepali trekkers have arrived in Nepal

DSC_0869

Thirteen non-Nepali trekkers arrived in Kathmandu over the weekend and were welcomed to the Summit Hotel with a Puja (blessing ceremony) on Sunday evening (17th March). Trek leader Olin Parkinson was the first to be blessed. On a gorgeous warm evening, they were briefed on the practical, medical and research plans for the trek followed by dinner with the Kathmandu lab investigators. Everyone was up before 05.00 to complete the first of many diary sessions. Volunteer trekkers measured their heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and breathing rate at rest and following exercise. They then tucking into a hearty Summit breakfast by candlelight due to the frequent power cuts - most days see only eight hours of electricity supply in Kathmandu.

On a clear and calm morning the flights were running without problem and they reached Lukla early for a quick second breakfast and the start of the day's trek to Monjo. Trek D will reach Everest Base Camp on Thursday 28th March after seven days trekking plus two days testing in Namche Bazaar (3500 metres) and two days rest in Pheriche (4250 metres). The trek sirdar is Nima Temba Sherpa.
