The highest functioning medical research laboratory of its kind

IMG_0761

Since our last update the Xtreme Everest base camp has turned from a considerable pile of boxes and barrels into the world's highest, fully functioning medical research laboratory of its kind. Just before the base camp Investigators arrived a week ago the Logsitics team erected all the research tents and provided each tent with its own power supply. The challenges of building on ice, and its tendency to melt in the midday sun, has meant a few issues with locating the tents and keeping all the wiring off the ice but those issues are resolved for now. It's only a matter of time before the team begin relocating the tents to suit the new terrain that the ever moving Khumbu Glacier provides.

Once the Base Camp Investigators arrive they were straight into populating the research tents with all their specialist equipment. As is now a common theme, the conditions up at Base Camp are playing a significant part in the need to constantly test and adjust equipment to ensure they don't fail in the extreme cold. As we write all the equipment is up and running and the investigators are in full swing with their own Investigator Testing, keeping half an eye forward to the arrival of our first Sherpa Trek in a few days time.

The weather at Base Camp varies considerably. At night time we are averaging temperatures of -15C with a -28C recorded only two nights ago. The days are often sunny in the morning (t-shirt weather) with cloud streaming over the ridges in the afternoon, often bringing snow and plummeting temperatures. Life is all about wrapping up warm and looking after yourself to ensure we can still do all our various jobs effectively.
So far so good with everyone at the Base Camp Team and impressive progress is being made with the research in testing conditions. Thankfully we know the weather is only getting warmer so bring on the next few weeks!
