The base camp laboratory has been running for over a week now. Initially the investigators tested one another, battling against the elements to keep the equipment running in such a harsh environment. We are now almost half way through testing the Sherpas who have trekked up through the Khumbu via the laboratory in Namche Bazaar.
Sherpa trek A were a fantastic group, eager to take part in the science and great singers! The group, led by Andre Vercueil, arrived smiling and it was sad to see them leave for their descent to Kathmandu.
Life at base camp is challenging at the best of times. The mornings are bitterly cold with sub zero temperatures persisting until the sun comes over the gigantic mountains that surround us. The temperature then rapidly rises until the late afternoon when the clouds tend to roll in and it often snows. The scientific equipment requires frequent adjustment and attention to keep it running in the face of such a vast temperature range. The investigators also require defrosting occasionally!
Meal times are a main focus of the day, allowing the investigators to get together and relax. The food at base camp is exceptional, thanks to the incredible cook team we have here. They even baked and decorated a cake for the departing Sherpa Trek A.
