Exercise testing in Namche Bazaar

DSC_0304

The Namche Investigators have been putting each other on the exercise bikes recently to undertake VO2 max tests. Nelson and I were asked to do this as we had outlying values in relation to one particular test carried out on us by the YES 2 investigator team. Nelson is super fit, and I was a bit daunted about exercising at the same time as him, but in the end, his test had ended before mine even started.

I had not forgotten how breathless you feel doing a max test at altitude. It is really tempting to pull off the mask the moment you have reached your ‘max’, but we all persevered and let our masks remain in place to collect the ‘cool down’ data.

Thanks to Andy and Jo for supervising us on the bikes during a period of ‘downtime’. They could have been enjoying the sunny spring weather we have been having recently. The rhododendrons and wild irises are coming into bloom, and there are lots of pretty butterflies flitting about. I have not seen any baby yaks yet, but I live in hope!

Lovely to hear the expedition is going so well, and that you are still keeping up the fitness tests.
Fitness at sea level in Frodsham consists of digging the allotment ready for planting potatoes and onions. And then shovelling manure into the cold ground, hoping that the weak sunshine will surely warm up the ground ready for seeds. Everything has been delayed this spring due to a cold March wind and almost unheard-of snow lying on the ground for about a week. But now the daffodils are out and the birds have started to sing again, so spring is on the way.
Enjoy the rest of your time, and we hope the weather is good to you.
Graham and Chris send their love too.
