'Doctors on Everest' documentary wins award

Dr Joff Lacey

The Xtreme Everest 2 documentary, produced for Al Jazeera English by Grain Media, won the Foreign Press Association 'Science Story of the Year' award last night. This documentary was aired on UK television in August this year and outlines the science behind the medical research expedition that took place from March to May 2013.

The documentary includes interviews with some of the investigators and subjects who spent weeks, and sometimes months, in the Everest region, providing data. This data will be used to investigate differences between humans in how they adapt to hypoxia; a fundamental problem for patients who are critically ill. Information gained will be used to try to improve outcomes for patients who are critically ill.

The documentary was presented by Dr Joff Lacey, pictured, one of the investigators at Namche laboratory, who also works clinically in the NHS in the UK.
