Devastating earthquake in Nepal

The recent events in Nepal have been devastating and tragic. With the ongoing aftershocks continuing to cause fear and uncertainty, it is impossible to comprehend what it must be like for our friends in Nepal. It is unknown what has happened in more remote mountain communities at the epicenter of the quake, as communication has not been re-established according to the latest news reports this morning. We understand that there are still climbers stranded at camps one and two on Everest itself.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy, but in particular with our colleagues from Jagged Globe and Summit Trekking. Their expedition’s base camp was one of those hit by the avalanche and they have suffered a fatality and casualties.

Many of our trekkers have been in contact to ask for information about how best to help. There are a number of international organizations that have set up disaster appeals. They include:

Action Aid
Age International
British Red Cross
CAFOD
Oxfam
Save the Children
Tearfund
World Vision

These organisations are already on the ground in Nepal responding to the crisis.

Alternatively, there are three organisations that are more local to Nepal and the mountain communities in particular. These two organisations have also launched appeals.

The Himalayan Trust was founded by Sir Edmund Hillary. The website states:

We would all like a world where everybody’s basic needs are met and every child has access to an education. The Himalayan Trust UK aims to ensure this happens in the remote mountainous districts of Nepal - in particular the regions surrounding Everest and Kanchenjunga.

Their donation appeal site can be found here:

Porters Progress was set up in 2003 by members of a Medex expedition, impressed by the porters who looked after them. The website states:

Porters' Progress UK facilitates the safe treatment, education and empowerment of mountain porters and their communities through appropriate programmes, with priority given to creating change within the trekking industry.

Their donation appeal site can be found here:

Community Action Nepal, a UK based charity founded by Doug Scott, aimed at helping the mountain people of Nepal. The website states:

CAN works in partnership with mountain villages and communities to provide local health, education, income generation, cultural and mountain porter welfare facilities.

Their donation appeal site can be found here:

Please consider donating to any one of these excellent organisations. Xtreme Everest had already organized a team to run the Bournemouth marathon in October to raise funds for Xtreme Everest. We will be asking team members to consider raising funds for our friends in Nepal instead on this occasion.
