Interviews for investigators

Dan Martin, Ned Gilbert and I have started interviewing potential investigators to join us on XE 2. We saw the first six candidates out of 100 that have applied to work with us. Investigators are needed to work in our laboratories in London to carry out baseline testing from December of this year, and then in Nepal from the beginning of March 2013. The laboratories in Nepal will be sited in three different locations and will be managed by members of the 2007 team.

Our candidates are a mixture of medics, nurses, allied health professionals, and biomedical scientists. We shall also be recruiting to our logistics team in the near future, for which different skills will be required. Volunteers from our 2007 and 2010 expeditions found the experience hugely rewarding if somewhat tough at times. They were required to work consecutive long days in the laboratories, some of which are located in hostile environments.

Our laboratory staff will be required to exercise a variety of skills, from taking blood, running cardiopulmonary exercise tests, to performing ultrasound scans. All of this will need to be accurately labelled, stored safely, and backed up to ensure everything is available for future analysis. These willing individuals will not be paid for their efforts, but are giving their time free to help us improve our understanding of critical illness, for which we are immensely grateful.
